For over four decades, Detroit-born techno icon Jeff Mills has shaped, challenged and innovated electronic music. As the founder of Axis Records and a former member of the Underground Resistance collective, Mills has been instrumental in techno’s evolution from club culture to a global art form.
With Tomorrow Comes The Harvest, Jeff Mills presents a concert that moves in the borderland between club, jazz, afrobeat and cosmic electronics. Electronic percussion, synthesizers, flutes, piano and guitar meet here, where the rhythm is at the center and the music grows organically in the moment.
The project came about through the collaboration between Mills and French-Nigerian drummer Tony Allen – who, along with Fela Kuti, is considered the founder of Afrobeat – and manifested itself in the live album released in 2018, ‘Tomorrow Comes The Harvest’. After Tony Allen’s death in 2020, Jeff Mills decided to reinvent the group by inviting new musicians.
About Jeff Mills
Jeff Mills, born 1963 in Detroit, Michigan, is a DJ, record producer, composer who has been active since the early 1980s. Mills is considered one of the pioneers of Detroit techno, a style that featured analog synths and drum machines early on. Mills is also known by the nicknames The Wizard and True Faith.
Mills also has a deep interest in science fiction, which is often reflected in his projects and aesthetic. He has created his own conceptual series such as Sleeper Wakes, made sci-fi inspired soundtracks, and worked on film and art installations. He has also collaborated with symphony orchestras and combined electronic music with classical elements.
Jeff Mills has had a major impact on both techno and electronic music in general, especially when it comes to minimalism, DJ technique and the perception of techno as an art form.
On stage, Jeff Mills and his hand-picked ensemble create elongated, pulsating pieces that move towards trance. It’s music for the room and for the moment – where the energy of the dance floor meets the focus of the concert stage.
Jeff Mills Presents Tomorrow Comes The Harvest is a chance for the club audience to experience Jeff Mills in one of his most open and transgressive projects within the walls of the concert hall – and for the concert hall audience to meet one of techno’s absolute central figures.
